I previously wrote about how I think New World: Aeternum might be the last chance saloon for the game. Some of the press around the game has resonated with a sense of finality. This is the game, this is what you’re getting, all it ever will be. It’d be sad to see New World falter when so many other MMOs have continued to grow and improve over many years, but I understand that Amazon Games has already got future projects in mind. I expect some in-game events and patches in the coming months, but I’m not sure if we’ll ever get another big expansion. But I’m happy to be proven wrong, and I hope that a solid playerbase of console players helps keep the game afloat long enough for that to happen.
A trip through the character creator (that was an hour I’ll never get back) proved to be very in-depth, allowing you to choose everything from your class (I went with Occultist because I like to hit things from a distance) to your hairstyle, nose size, and more. New World: Aeternum makes it easy to customize your character to suit your preferences—you can even make your very own mustachioed, long-haired DPS merchant if you desire. I finally emerged with a character I was proud of and set off into the game proper.
In New World: Aeternum, this issue—at least in the early game—is remedied by having the first settlement close enough to the starting area that finding it doesn’t require navigation tools rivaling those of Columbus or Polo. However, once you leave the first settlement, even just to go questing (side or otherwise), you’ll be spending a lot of time running. With running comes the risk of accidentally stumbling upon areas that are significantly higher level than you—an experience I had a few too many times for my liking.
As with any MMORPG, there’s a PvP element to New World: Aeternum, which comes in a few different forms. For starters, you can flag yourself for PvP, allowing anyone you encounter to attack you. This isn’t my cup of tea, and in my week with the game, I saw exactly one other person on my server, so I didn’t really get a chance to try it out.

The play is often known as the “Buckner play” and is blamed on the first baseman, but Mookie Wilson’s smart at-bat and speed also affected the course of events. (If Buckner had made that play and Wilson had been safe, Howard Johnson would have been the next batter with runners on first and third. In the ninth, Mookie Wilson doubled with two outs and scored on Rafael Santana’s single before Hurst struck out Lenny Dykstra to end the game as the Red Sox’s 4–2 gave them a 3–2 series lead heading back to New York.
Had Buckner fielded the ball with Wilson safe at first, the score would have remained tied for the next Mets batter. Had Buckner put out Wilson at first base – either by himself or by throwing to a covering Stanley – Game 6 would have gone to an 11th inning.
