Milwaukee first baseman Rhys Hoskins won the Marvin Miller man of the year award, given to a player whose leadership inspires others, and the philanthropist of the year award. Along with wife Jayme, Hoskins has raised over $1 million for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
The story of Game 2 of the 2024 World Series is without any doubt Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The Yankee bats were completely silenced by him, save a lone home run surrendered to Juan Soto in the second inning. He was taken out of the game in the seventh after just 86 pitches, a move that unnecessarily jeopardized the Dodgers chances in this game. Ok, that threat never materialized, but that was down more to the terrible Yankee bats than anything out of the Dodger bullpen.
The Yankees are sticking with Rodón for the moment but they have the look of a team that is shell shocked. Max Muncy leads off for the Dodgers and he chops the first pitch foul. He can’t hold off on the slider so Rodón goes back to it. 1-2
Will Smith the hitter now and he fouls off four pitches on the way to a 2-2 count. Rodón delivers a changeup that is tapped softly up the third base line. Rodón pounces on it and delivers a bullet to Rizzo at first for the thrid out.
Aaron Judge comes to the plate and Yamamoto licks his lips. He has a curve ball that owns Judge tonight. And as predicted, Yamamoto missed on two fastballs before striking him out with two curves and a sinker. He may be a beast with the bat, but Judge is having real trouble with the curve tonight.
Giancarlo Stanton leads off for the Yankees and they are running out of runway in front of them. They need to get something started but Yoshinobu Yamamoto has their number. He is sitting on a one-hitter going into seven.
Oldest game in the world
In total, there are (you guessed it) 58 holes on the board, arranged in two parallel lines of 10 holes in the center, which are then surrounded by an arc of 38 holes. In order to play, players each have five pegs and take turns moving them along the holes from the starting point and then up their own respective sides to the endpoint. Some holes have lines going between them. These lines serve as “chutes” or “ladders”, giving a player a chance to advance forward quickly or to accidentally fall back.
The earliest identifiable tables game, Tabula, meaning ‘table’ or ‘board’, is described in an epigram of Byzantine Emperor Zeno (AD 476–491). The overall aim was to be first to bear one’s pieces off; the board had the typical tables layout, with 24 points, 12 on each side; and there were 15 counters per player. However, unlike modern Western backgammon, there were three cubical dice not two, no bar nor doubling die, and all counters started off the board. Modern backgammon follows the same rules as tabula for hitting a blot and for bearing off; and the rules for re-entering pieces in backgammon are the same as those for initially entering pieces in tabula. The name Tavli (τάβλι) is still used in Greece for various tables games, which are frequently played in town plateias and cafes.
Backgammon playing pieces may be termed men, checkers, draughts, stones, counters, pawns, discs, pips, chips, or nips. Checkers is a relatively modern American English term derived from another board game, draughts, which in US English is called checkers.
An important source of medieval games is the Libro de los juegos, (“Book of games”), or Libro de acedrex, dados e tablas, (“Book of chess, dice and tables”, in Old Spanish) which was commissioned by Alfonso X of Castile, Galicia and León in 1283. The manuscript contains descriptions and color illustrations of dice games, chess and tabula, a predecessor of backgammon. The book portrays these games within an astrological context, and some game variants are astronomically designed, such as a game titled “astronomical chess”, played on a board of seven concentric circles, divided radially into twelve areas, each associated with a constellation of the Zodiac. The symbolism of the text indicates that some of these games were given metaphysical significance. Chess was also used to teach social and moral lessons by the Dominican friar Jacobus de Cessolis in his Liber de moribus hominum et officiis nobilium super ludo scacchorum (‘Book of the customs of men and the duties of nobles or the Book of Chess’). Published circa 1300, the book was immensely popular.
The “Jacoby rule”, named after Oswald Jacoby, allows gammons and backgammons to count for their respective double and triple values only if the cube has already been offered and accepted. This encourages a player with a large lead to double, possibly ending the game, rather than to play it to conclusion hoping for a gammon or backgammon. The Jacoby rule is widely used in money play but is not used in match play.
