With very few exceptions, a World Series’ average viewership tops the Game 1 number. If that’s the case here, this will be the most-watched World Series in the U.S. since at least 2018, which averaged 18 million viewers.

But there was Verlander back out there and Marsh doubled, Schwarber walked and J.T. Realmuto tied the game with a two-run double. These Phillies don’t quit, that’s for sure. In our predictions file heading into the series, I warned that Baker was likely to leave a starter in too long at some point — and we just saw it happen. 2015: Royals 5, Mets 4 (14 innings)The Royals got off to a fast start in Game 1, when Alcides Escobar hit an inside-the-park leadoff homer in the bottom of the first. But the Mets fought back and found themselves with a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the sixth before the Royals tied it back up. The Mets took the lead again in the eighth on an error, and they appeared poised for a series-opening 4-3 win. Jeurys Familia induced a groundout from Salvador Perez to start the ninth, but then he allowed a game-tying homer to Alex Gordon. The game went 14 innings, the longest World Series Game 1 by innings in history, with the Royals eventually winning on an Eric Hosmer walk-off sacrifice fly off Bartolo Colon. The game set the tone for the series, too, as the Mets held a lead at some point in each of the four games they lost en route to the Royals’ World Series win.

On the decision to send Giancarlo Stanton on Anthony Volpe’s single in the fourth inning, Yankees manager Aaron Boone said they wanted to be aggressive in challenging the arm of Teoscar Hernández, especially when Hernández was moving to his right.

The last time the Yankees were down 2-0 in the World Series was 1996. Just like this year, that team had broken a 15-year World Series drought but had fallen in the first two contests. The 2024 version is hoping history repeats itself starting tonight.

Of course, the big question hovering over this matchup was Ohtani’s health after he left Game 2 in the seventh with a shoulder injury. The incident cast a pall over the stadium, but Ohtani was later cleared to play Game 3. How much the injury affects him is yet to be seen. Will he be at full strength for the rest of this series?
